'Oh, I wasn't planning to stop with a kiss this time, Red.'

She decided abruptly that she was tired of playing games with him, and she came directly to the point. 'Just what is it you want from me, Dane?'

He was equally frank. 'Your shares of stock in Twin Rivers Bakeries.

I've always had an urge to own it; I'm sure that comes as no surprise to you.'

'No, I'd managed to guess that. You won't get those shares away from me, Dane. I'd die first—and if I do I'll leave them to ... charity, if I have to. Or to the lucky hundredth person to sign the visitor's book at my funeral! Anything to keep them away from you.'

He ignored her outburst. 'I'll offer you fifty a share, by the way, Red.

Take it or leave it. You can have the money in time to spend Christmas in the Caribbean, and that's no small matter considering that it's only a week away.'

Jenny shrugged. 'Sorry. It looks to me as if I've earned ten dollars a share since you made that offer on Sunday. I think I'll wait a few days.

It will be interesting to see how high you go in a hopeless cause.' She parked the car next to the back door. 'Would you like to tell me where all the money is coming from, by the way?'

'Of course not. That's strictly my business. But be assured that I'm not bluffing. I play fair--'

'Ha!' she interrupted.

'So I'm honour bound to tell you that if you agree to sell me those shares, thinking that you'll humiliate me when I can't come up with the cash, you'll have lost your bet.'

'I think you're bluffing.'

'I hope you don't play much poker, honey. You're not only a naive player, but you're a bad loser. That offer, by the way, has a time limit on it. Midnight Saturday it expires. Don't try to hold me up the way you're conning Richard.'

'Just what does that mean?' Jenny flared.

Dave picked up her hand. 'Nice little piece of rock you're wearing. A bribe to keep you here? I hope you're worth what you're costing him.'

If he thought she had bought it for herself, Jenny wasn't going to waste her time explaining. 'Why don't you ask him?' she said tightly, and slammed the door of the car when she got out.
